The song was originally sung by Italian partisans (resistance fighters) during World War II, fighting against the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini and the Nazi occupation of Italy.
"It tells the story of a freedom fighter who is ready to die for justice and asks to be buried in the mountains under the shadow of a beautiful flower, symbolizing hope and sacrifice.
